This book is a result of the efforts of ten authors, among them the three editors. It covers a wide range of topics related to the various aspects of fruit growing and is meant for all people actively involved in temperate pome and stone fruit production, such as growers, nursery staff, advisors and post-harvest specialists, as well as horticultural teachers and students. For this reason, the book avoids highly specialized disciplines such as modeling and biochemistry. The book is not a manual with detailed recommendations for cultural practices, but rather focuses on explaining the underlying principles and mechanisms of common phenomena. Given the rapid development in the various temperate fruit industries, a practical manual would soon be out of date. Also, practices vary considerably between regions of fruit production, on account of differences in environmental factors and growers' traditions. It is hoped that this book, which attempts to explain many of the principles underpinning these varied commercial practices, will be of more value in the long term.

"Transgenic plants serve as essential tools for research in plant biology and are the basis of modern agricultural biotechnology. In Transgenic Plants: Methods and Protocols, leading scientists describe readily reproducible techniques they have perfected for the genetic transformation and regeneration of plants. The authors cover the most commonly used transformation systems, including Agrobacterium tumefaciens, Agrobacterium rhizogenes, particle bombardment, electroporation, floral-dip, and chloroplast transformation, as well as the regeneration of whole transgenic plants by organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis from different explant cells/tissues, and from such diverse plant species as tomato, cassava, conifers, and citrus. Also described are the use of selectable and reporter markers, positive selection (for maize transformation), and the controlled excision and removal of marker genes from both nuclei and plastids once transgenic shoots have been efficiently generated. Additional techniques employ quantitative real-time PCR, reverse transcription PCR, fluorescence in in situ hybridization, and thermal asymmetric interlaced PCR. Risk assessment methods offer the opportunity to study Agrobacterium persistence in plant tissues and to investigate the possibility of transgene dispersal. The protocols follow the Methods in Molecular Biology series format, each offering step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principle behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls."

"The chapters in this book present a snapshot of the state of knowledge of air pollution effects at the beginning of the 21st century. From their different disciplines, a distinguished collection of authors document their understanding of how leaves, trees, and forests respond to air pollutants and climate change. Scenarios of global change and air pollution are described. The authors describe responses of forests to climate variability, tropospheric ozone, rising atmospheric CO₂, the combination of CO₂ and ozone, and deposition of acidic compounds and heavy metals. The responses to ozone receive particular attention because of increasing concern about its damaging effects and increasing concentrations in rural areas. Scaling issues are addressed - from leaves to trees, from juvenile trees to mature trees, from short-term responses to long-term responses, and from small-scale experiments and observations to large-scale forest ecosystems. This book is one major product of a conference sponsored by the International Union of Forestry Research Organizations, the USDA Forest Service Global Change Northern Stations Program, the Arthur Ross Foundation, NCASI, the Canadian Forest Service, and Michigan Technological University. The conference, held in May 2000 in Houghton, Michigan, USA, was appropriately titled "Air Pollution, Global Change, and Forests in the New Millennium". The Editors, David Karnosky, Kevin Percy, Art Chappelka, Caroline Simpson, and Janet Pikkarainen organized the conference and edited this book."

Nutrition of Eucalypts is the first major book dealing with aspects of eucalypt growing. It provides a comprehensive survey of the work on eucalypts growing on old, highly weathered Australian soils, and eucalypts grown in plantations in Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, China, India, Portugal, Spain, Brazil, Chile and Argentina.

This book includes a diagnostic tool for recognizing nutrient deficiencies and guides the reader towards a critical understanding of such questions as:
Are there substantial nutritional differences among species and subgenera?
What are the nutrient requirements of plantation-grown eucalypts both in Australia and overseas?
Are native forests 'limited' in growth and distribution by nutrients?

This book documents all the available information on plants that have been used traditionally for anti-fertility and fertility purposes in the Pacific region. This is a rigorous and timely scientific endeavor. The authors have used anthropologists' accounts, explorers' reports and other recorded literature to establish which plants have been used as contraceptives and abortifacients in Pacific Island societies over the last two centuries. The botanical information in this book is intended to assist the recognition of the species and to indicate where the plants may be found. Individual plant descriptions are not botanically diagnostic and for the benefit of the non-botanist have been couched as far as possible in everyday terms. The book's authors:

Over the past four years, some forty German and French laboratories have been working together in the context of the EUREKA/EUROSILVA program on the physiology of forest trees in temperate zones. After an introductory reminder of the origins and activities of the program, this publication concentrates on 16 original papers compiled by the different scientific partners, which review both the initial situation prevailing prior to the program and recent results obtained in different fields such as anatomy, plant chemistry and molecular biology. Topics include:

- Tree development: lignification (and the genes involved); heartwood formation; cambial differentiation; juvenility and rhizogenesis.
- Action of different stress factors: role of the cuticle with regards to pollution; ecophysiological impact of air pollution; genetic basis and physiological function of glutathione as a defence mechanism against pollution; cold resistance.

Ecologists and biogeographers have long been intrigued by the striking similarity between the flora of southern temperate zone regions separated by large oceans. Of particular interest has been the occurrence in these regions of Nothofagus--southern beeches.
